It’s also the year in which teenager Thomas Brückner gains his first experience as a DJ, under the pseudonym “Tomcraft”. The Techno and Rave movement is young. White Labels over 145 bpm are the measure of all things, and all the protagonists at the turntables and the underground labels put together only make up a cosy little community.
Now, more than two decades later, Tomcraft is still rocking on the DJ platform; he’s merely traded in vinyl for CDs, and he can rightfully claim to have been a driving force behind the history of electronic music in the last 20 years – as a DJ, as a producer and as a label manager.
- As a DJ he has performed in virtually every major club and at every festival of note. “Happiness seems to be Loneliness and Loneliness rules my world”: This hookline, combined with style-defining production, has been celebrated on the dance floors of the world for ten years now. The release of “Loneliness” was a turning point in Tomcraft’s DJ career. Although the first reactions to the record were exuberant, no-one could have foreseen the number’s global success and influence. No. 1 in the UK – most played dance track on the radio in 2003 – and ultimately induction into the Electronic Music Hall of Fame.

So it is understandable that Tomcraft always also saw “Loneliness” as his own personal holy grail. Today, 10 years after its first release, Tomcraft has reproduced the track together with his then studio partner Eniac for his “20 Years” album, and given it a new sound for the next decade. And they’ve done it again: big bass line meets big vocal line!

Alongside Tomcraft’s mix, two very special bootlegs have also made the leap to an official remix. Tujamo, without doubt one of last year’s shooting stars, lays the vocals over an organ line on his house mix, immediately calling forth associations with the legendary “Beachball” track. Goose bumps guaranteed!

And then there’s Jaxxon, the unbelievable newcomer from the UK. His Big Room Progressive Bootleg instantaneously found its way onto the playlists of big names like Ferry Corsten, David Guetta and Gareth Enemy.

Tomcraft always did have a knack for great collaborations, and he’s hit the ball out of the park again this time, getting founding member of Faithless, Sister Bliss, in front of the microphone for an epic, dark, club monster that has been a highlight of his DJ set for months.

Whether in South America or Europe, festival crowds just lose the plot when they hear this track. The combination of hedonistic lyrics – “We are all gods of the digital age”, “We are supersonic” – with the fattest Tomcraft bassline in decades guarantees wall-to-wall intoxication. At the latest when the big break comes the DJ is looking out over a sea of raised hands.

Releases normally come with remixes, but in this case Kosmo Records has decided against other interpretations. This track is a statement: “We are supersonic.”

Layori “Rebirth”, Album Release: 21 September 2012

Gleich mit den ersten Takten des bluesgefärbten Titels „Dada“, den die aus Nigeria stammende Layori in ihrer Muttersprache Yoruba singt, kann sich der Zuhörer in eine Klangwelt hineinziehen lassen, in der Pop, Soul, Worldmusic und Jazz ganz unaufgeregt miteinander kommunizieren und die vom Funkhaus Europa gerne als Global Pop bezeichnet wird.
Mit ihrer sinnlichen Altstimme zielt die Sängerin direkt auf die Herzen und Seelen derer, die ihr lauschen. Schon oft ist sie mit Tracy Chapman verglichen worden, manchmal auch mit Sade (die wie sie zum Stamm der Yoruba gehört).
Dabei handelt es sich bei ihrem vorliegenden Album „Rebirth“ bereits um ihr zweites Werk, ihr Debut Album „Origin“ wurde bislang über Universal Records nur in Frankreich und Polen veröffentlicht, wo es eine eindrucksvolle Top 30 Album Chart Position erreichte.
Bereits bei dieser Erstveröffentlichung wurde Layori von der Presse gerne als die „Diva of Worldmusic“ oder auch „African Nina Simone“ bezeichnet.

Club Music has always been quite exciting, when artists or songs from other genres were newly interpreted using tools of electronic music.
In this case, Kosmo Records has felt free to put the vocals of the Nigerian singer Layori in the hands of selected producers. Originally, with “Iwa Lewa”, an Afro jazz title sung in the Nigerian Yoruba, Layori was able to cast a trance-like spell during her live performance over her audience.
Our remixers have managed to take away that mantra-like power of the “Iwa Lewa” original into the world of electronic club music, without losing the original suction effect of the songs and Layori’s voice.
While Lissat & Voltaxx has succeeded to make a warm house track for the main floor, Kosmo producer Ike X provides the perfect sundown – terraces mix with goose bumps break.
The main mix of this exciting remix-package seems to come from Portuguese DJ-Superstar Diego Miranda:

Tomcraft and Kosmo Records has always been a unit which left a lasting impression. After a five year break, Tomcraft is now returning to it’s former Homebase Kosmo Records with a small series of releases to celebrate his 20th DJ anniversary appropriately with the very same label he was most successful with.

The first release already shows the vigorous effect of this set-up: A massive re-work of the dark electro-smash hit “Overdose”. This track has still been – apart from the mega hit “Loneliness” (UK No. 1) the “most requested track” of the DJ set by Tomcraft.

The original from 2002 was already produced by Tomcraft and the sound genius Eniac, and also with the 2012 version both are at their best again.

A Tomcraft track has never sounded more fresh, crisp and “up to date” before until this. It seems Tomcraft resembles a good red wine, it doesn’t age but only becomes more precious and valuable. Kosmo Records is particularly proud of this renewed collaboration and the release.
